What Decor Style Will Complement My Personality Type?

Our characteristics dictate the kind of home we love to live in ... find out which type you are and the spaces you thrive in

You pick clothes to suit you. Home decor is something like clothes: it is what you inhabit, and when it suits your personality, it looks good and feels great. Personality types are often referred to as Type A, B, C, D and so on; each has certain traits and characteristics which set it apart from the others. Wondering what type you belong to? Find out and learn all about the kind of interiors that would match your personality.

  • Type A

Type A people love competition and are forever on a quest to achieve greatness. They are perfectionists and workaholics, generally with a goal-oriented mindset. Such personality types like orderly spaces and cannot function properly inside a cluttered, chaotic space. They love owning expensive, luxurious things and are usually quite brand conscious. They also value the look of a product or object, a little more than its functionality. They also love organisation projects – tell them to clean up a messy area and they would happily make a day of it.

Decor musts

If you belong to this type, your interiors should complement your discerning style with designer decor pieces and hi-tech gadgets. Tables with inlay work, leather high-back armchairs, a Chesterfield sofa, pyrite, amethyst or topaz tabletops, chenille or jewel-toned fabrics, expensive art, chandeliers, textured paints are your go-to choices for interior decoration.

Organisation rules

You should opt for extremely organised, streamlined storage spaces, and lots of them. Walk-in wardrobes, neat shoe closets, corner storage shelves, under-bed drawers, multipurpose furniture like ottomans or stools that double as storage units, wall cabinets, organisers for documents and accessories, all will find relevance in your home and help you create an interior that’s an organisation heaven.

  • Type B

Calm, a little laid-back, less stressed-out people make up a Type B personality. They tend to be very creative and love finding the easiest, quickest solutions to problems. If given the choice between working or relaxing, they are likely to choose the latter. They love to chill, their homes are usually very comfortable and non-fussy. However, they can be a little disorganised – after all, who wants to deal with so much household work when there are other fun things to?

Decor musts

If you’re a Type B, then laid-back luxury is on your mind. This means plush sofas, bean bags, soft beds, indulgent gadgets, an entertainment room, quiet bay windows for dreaming, a corner for your hobby, perhaps – all will find relevance in your home. Choose quirky art or vintage posters to decorate your walls. Experiment with typography in bathrooms, pick funky door knobs and handles, connect your home to a nice music system and turn your home into a sanctuary of fun and relaxation.

Organisation rules

Uncomplicated, easy-to-reach and easy-to-spot storage options are ideal for you as these will help you quickly organise your home with minimal effort. Open shelves, low cabinets, sliding doors for wardrobes, bedside tables or storage above the bed, wall hooks and hangers for storing things are your go-to solutions.

  • Type C

There is beauty in details; Type C people always love to look for the finer nuances in things and objects. They love to over-analyse things and are extremely meticulous in nature. Before purchasing anything, they carefully weigh its pros and cons and always make a very informed decision. They strive for originality, cleverness and individuality in whatever they do. Every major item in their home is like a collector’s piece – everything will have a story and some uniqueness attached to it.

Decor musts

Since you are a lover of finer things, use that gorgeous art piece you found during your travels and make it the centre of attention in your drawing room. Get the larger items in your home (sofas, dining table and chairs, bookshelves) custom-made to suit your specific needs and likes. Visit stores and spend days searching for ‘finds’. Always keep a look out for handcrafted, well-engineered furniture pieces during your travels. And of course, balance out the rest of the home with accessories that have an emotional value – maybe a tall vase gifted to you by a close friend, a lamp that you purchased from your first salary, plants to keep the indoor environment relaxed and other things that tug at your heartstrings.

Organisation rules

Look for hyper-organised storage – this means that not only should a drawer or a cabinet be neat and orderly, there needs to be proper sections for differently sized items. It’s best to custom -make your storage cabinets so you have big to tiny sections inside it – for your clothes, socks, bags, jewellery, watches, wallets, scarves, gadgets, and the rest. A Type C like you not only loves getting into the details of the storage sections, you even like to find the best finishes, materials and technology systems – but not without proper research.

  • Type D

Mostly introverted, Type D people like to keep to themselves. They are easily prone to stress and negative emotions and look to others for emotional support. In their private lives, they are very organised. They are usually averse to change and can stay in the same job or home environment without making any changes. Type D people are also melancholic and love to hold on to old things and habits.

Decor musts

Choose comfortable, high-quality furniture that will last long. Kashmiri durries, soft-hued paints, Pichhwais, slightly gentle and subtle interiors, an old coffee table, darker furnishings, all will put you at peace. Consider having cosy, reclusive corners (say a private balcony, a study room, a bay window in your bedroom) where you can be by yourself.

Organisation rules

Since you are a more private person, choose closed shelves and cabinets with ribbed or dark glass rather than open ones. It is for the same privacy reasons that you would prefer wardrobes and cabinets that come with high tech locking systems.
