Mirrors, light, storage: How to maximize space in a small bedroom

Since space is at a premium, the bedrooms of urban Indian homes are gradually becoming more and more compact. Hence, if you are designing or renovating a compact bedroom, it is important to enhance its functionality by ensuring the maximum utilization of the available space. Here are some tried-and-tested methods to improve the spatial efficiency of a compact bedroom so that it can transform into a highly functional space that’s perfect for relaxation.

Plan the Furniture Layout

The most preferred position for the bed is at the centre of a blank wall. Make provisions for side tables on either side of the bed to create adequate walking space around the bedroom. Increase vertical storage by installing floor-to-ceiling wardrobes, and if there is a space crunch, you could even integrate the dresser with the wardrobe.

Allow Maximum Natural Light

Make provision for large windows that allow plenty of natural light to enter the room and create a brilliant indoor-outdoor connection. Incorporate mirrored surfaces on the walls or wardrobe doors as mirrors reflect light and create the illusion of a larger space.

Incorporate Layered Lighting

Create a well-illuminated bedroom with a layered lighting scheme, which includes ambient, task, and accent lighting. The ambient or general lighting of the bedroom can be achieved with ceiling-mounted light fixtures, recessed light fixtures, pendant lights, or recessed cove lighting. For reading, the task lighting may include bedside lamps or wall-mounted bracket lights above the side tables. Use warm lighting for accent lights to highlight the decorative features of the bedroom decor.

Incorporate Built-in Storage

Invest in built-in storage to create a well-organized and clutter-free space. Think: storage beds, adding storage on the accent wall behind the bed, fixing floating shelves, or using the window to create a window seat with storage.

Opt for Neutral colours

Paint the walls in neutral colours like white or off-white because of their ability to bounce light and impart a bright and airy look to a space. However, you could also choose to add some colour to a space through accessories or soft furnishings. Dark colours must be avoided, as they absorb light and can make the bedroom appear smaller and feel cramped.

Buy Multipurpose Furniture

During the ongoing pandemic, most bedrooms have been playing multifunctional roles. You can improve the functionality of your bedroom by incorporating furniture with dual functions. For example, an open bookcase can function as a divider to segregate a bedroom into a sleeping area and a home office, online school, or gym. Choose tall dressers with plenty of storage drawers; and include nesting tables and ottomans that can work as coffee tables and as seating with storage.
