Collins Dictionary has declared Regencycore as one of the Top 10 ‘Words of the year’ for 2021. And rightly so, because after the airing of the much-acclaimed web show Bridgerton, the trend has stepped right out of 18 th century to 2021! Take a look at how the trend grew in the country.

 What is Regencycore?

In simple terms, it is an aesthetic inspired by the high society residents of the Regency era which lasted from 1811-1820. It was a period known distinctively for its high fashion, culture, literature and socio-economic-political changes. Shows like Bridgerton, Crown and Belgravia brought back the aesthetics from this period through their romance and drama series, which became a hit with the audience – leading to the phenomenon of Regencycore. It is also known as regal core or royal core.

What spells #regencycore

  • Corsets
  • Long hand gloves
  • Empire cut waist line
  • Floral printed tea sets
  • Pastel blue, green and pink wallpapers
  • Floral upholstery
  • Four-poster bed and gilded furniture

Fuelled by OTT, Regencycore takes over fashion

While the popular shows speak about the regency era in London, the sartorial choices of the young ladies from the 19 th century made a huge impact on celebrities and fashion enthusiasts of the country too. Celebrities like Khushi Kapoor, Tania Shroff, Disha Patani, Ananya Panday and others owned the corsets paired with skirts, jeans and even lehengas. Regency style gowns with a touch of Indian aesthetics by designers like Tarun Tahlini also brought the trend under spotlight.

Women in India took to corsets and empire style dresses with much enthusiasm. And anyway, 2021 was highlighted by over the top dressing to make up for the lost year, hence beaded hair accessories, tiaras, gloves and laces dominated styling, like the regency era. Recently, Adah Sharma was also seen flaunting elbow length gloves with her saree at an awards function.
